After much discussion and delay, an earthquake warning system for the West Coast has finally received federal funding and is hoped to be operational within two years. While additional funding is required to complete the project, this initial approval makes clear the intent to join the ranks of countries like Japan, Mexico, Taiwan and Turkey in helping to mitigate the effects of earthquakes. Although the warning may only provide up to one minute of warning time, that may be enough to help millions prepare physically and mentally for the coming shock. Eventually, alerts will be broadcast widely via text, email, TV and radio. It’s an exciting development in defense of the least predictable of Earth’s natural disasters.
